Fishing Catch Details - Revamp
Simplify catch detail data entry process to ensure a smoother user experience
Duration : 2 weeks
Role : Lead Designer
Tools : Visiliy, Figma, Adobe Illustrator
Overview
The "Catch Details" feature in Fishgram enables Fishermen and Boat-Owners to organize essential information about their sea-caught raw materials systematically. Through this feature, fishermen can thoroughly document their catches, meet sustainability requirements, enhance traceability, and comply with seafood export regulations.
However, this feature has seen limited use, with very low user engagement and activity.
Understanding the Problem
To identify the reasons behind the limited adoption, the team collaborated with the procurement team to conduct user research. Here's what we learned:
Complex Flow
The existing catch detail flow is too long and complex for users.
Excessive Data Entry
Requiring specific details like time of catch, weather conditions, and even moon phase posed challenges for less tech-savvy users.

The Solution : Simplify the process
The goal was to significantly simplify data entry and create a smoother user experience.
During a 2-week design sprint, I collaborated with the Product Manager and Engineering team to minimize required information and streamline the flow. The initial process comprised 7 steps and 10 questions, which we aimed to reduce.
Additionally, the product aimed to introduce an offline feature, given the limited connectivity at sea for Fishermen. Their fishing trips usually last around 15-25 days. Having an offline option was crucial in this context.
Brainstorming & Ideation
Our primary goal was to minimize data entry steps and streamline the process for fishermen. Here's how we achieved this:
1. Revising steps
Through close collaboration with the Product Manager (PM) and Tech Lead, we carefully reviewed each step in the existing flow. We ensured there weren't any technical limitations that would prevent our proposed changes.
2. Automated Data Capture
We took advantage of image metadata. This allows the system to automatically capture time and location data upon image upload. This not only reduces manual entry for user but also enhances data authenticity.
3. Enhanced Data Extraction
By leveraging the captured time and location data, the system can automatically extract relevant weather information. This further reduces the need for user input and streamlines the process.
4. Offline Capability
Fishermen could log catches without connectivity, syncing the data when back online for accuracy in analysis.
User Flow and wireframes
The above changes resulted in a significantly simplified user flow. The new flow consists of only 3 steps, with an additional summary page for data review before submission. This not only streamlines the process but also significantly reduces time spent logging catches for fishermen, ensuring a more efficient experience.
After this I quickly drew wireframes to finalized the flow.
A key focus was maintaining consistency between the online and offline processes, with one exception for offline functionality. To streamline catch logging during fishing trips, I included the most commonly caught fish options on the offline homepage, eliminating an extra step.
Visual Designs
Upon finalizing the user flow, I immediately began developing visual designs. In parallel, I prioritized the creation of clear illustrations for catch types, ensuring easy user identification, particularly for those who are less tech-savvy. Additionally, I ensured the design's adaptability to accommodate multiple languages.

Outcome
The redesign isn't just about simplifying catch logging but also about enhancing the platform's user-friendliness, especially for Fishermen and Boat-Owners in remote or poorly connected areas.
Positive feedback from users about the updated flow has been received. While adoption is gradually increasing, the response has been encouraging. Over the past 5 months, 232 catches were logged, a considerable improvement compared to before.
